About the workAlthough the worshippers dressed in colour stand out in this view of a church interior, the Düsseldorf artist Gustav Wendling seems to have been interested in something else: the large wall surface behind them and the play of light upon it. What initially appears to be white proves on closer inspection to be a combination of multiple tones and is almost reminiscent of abstract painting. Wendling was primarily a landscape painter. As in his views of the Baltic Sea or the Dutch coast, a calm atmosphere prevails in this interior scene.
