About the workDuring the revolution of 1848, a new style of painting emerged in Düsseldorf that denounced social injustice. Carl Wilhelm Hübner was one of its leading representatives. In this critically acclaimed work, the artist depicts the shooting of a poor man by a forester at his master’s behest. The man had illegally killed a wild boar that had ravaged his field. Hunting laws were not reformed until the revolution. This is the second version of this picture: if motifs were successful, they were often repeated.
