on display, room 010.1 About the workThis still life is thought to be a copy after an unknown work by the Dutch artist Rachel Ruysch. She was one of the few famous and economically successful female painters of her time – which is why her pictures were deemed worthy of copying. Specialising in opulent floral still lifes, Ruysch was a court painter to the Düsseldorf Elector Johann Wilhelm between 1708 and 1716. He was thus entitled to half of everything she produced each year. Despite this role, Ruysch continued to live in Amsterdam, where she was married to the painter Juriaen Pool and had ten children.
