About the workJohann Peter Hasenclever, who worked mainly in Düsseldorf, delighted critics and collectors with his exaggerated depictions. He presents this maudlin young woman as a “victim” of literature: Heinrich Clauren’s romantic novel “Mimili” is on the windowsill, while Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther” is on the table. The extreme emotional worlds of both books were considered dangerous at the time, especially for women, who were supposedly easily influenced. The letter to “dearly beloved Fanny” and the picture of a man show that this sentimentalist has applied what she has read to her own life.
