About the workThe Düsseldorf painter Gerhard Janssen was known for his party and tavern scenes as well as his depictions of drunk people. This scene shows an entertainment venue in Düsseldorf’s Neustraße, where concerts were also held. An older man approaches a lady who keeps her distance and looks at him warily, perhaps even with slight amusement, out of the corner of her eye. His beer glass is empty, unlike hers. What has brought the woman here is unclear: is she the man’s companion, or has she – in an act that would have been considered unusual or even indecent at the time – turned up alone?
