About the workAt the age of around 30, the Austrian landscape painter Carl Schuch turned to still lifes. From that point onwards, he would never let go of this pictorial format. The artist frequently depicted apples on white tablecloths. He was interested in questions of composition, colour and painting technique. Schuch chose an occasionally sketchy style of painting that made him a forerunner of modernism. The lower third of the image in particular demonstrates the extent to which he broke away from the faithful reproduction of reality.
