About the workThe merry circle of carousing peasants is probably a warning by the Haarlem painter Adriaen van Ostade for his contemporaries to avoid such debauchery. He was skilled at producing humorous scenes in small formats for the upper middle classes. In this, he took inspiration from his teacher Frans Hals. “Taste”, like his painting “Hearing”, belongs to a series of representations of the senses.
