About the workThe glass bears the remains of a wax coating with a bishop’s seal. When a new altar was consecrated, the bishop placed a reliquary containing the remains of a saint in a cavity intended for this purpose. This glass jar would have contained such a relic. The seal belonged to the Tyrolean auxiliary bishop Konrad Reichard of Brixen and gives an indication of when the cup was produced. Its prunts recall the stalk of a cabbage plant stripped of its leaves. This is why a cup like this may also be referred to as a “Krautstrunk”, which means “cabbage stalk”.
