About the workColoured glass fused together can be drawn out into long, thin rods. From the rods, the “canne”, discs are cut, “murrine”, which always show the same pattern in cross-section. These are used to make colourful vessels, also known as “mosaic glass”. The English glass manufacturer Apsley Pellatt invented the term “millefiori”—a thousand flowers—in 1849. The technique had been rediscovered a few years earlier by the Venetian glassmaker Pietro Bigaglia and is still a standard of glass art in Murano today.
