on display, room G 08 About the workThe effort required to make this cup was enormous. Two thin-sided blank glasses had to be made to fit precisely, before being gilded, decorated and varnished. The artist cut an oval out of the outer cup and inserted a suitably curved medallion with the portrait. Johann Josef Mildner came from northern Bohemia and worked in Gutenbrunn, Austria, from 1787 at the latest. The Hungarian nobleman who commissioned this cup had the following inscribed underneath: “Long live the Kaiser, my girl and I, the Kaiser for all, my girl for me; but I for both, for the Kaiser’s service, for the girl’s happiness.”
