About the workA severely decomposed corpse in a twisted pose occupies almost the entire sheet. The drawing is either by the Bolognese painter Bartolomeo Passarotti or his son Tiburzio. Bartolomeo studied human anatomy intensively. He had planned to create an anatomical textbook, but it remained unfinished. He passed on his knowledge to his son and the students in his workshop. When the first art academies were founded in Italy in the sixteenth century, the study of anatomy became an important element of an artistic education.
