About the workThe Italian painter Giacinto Calandrucci ran his own workshop from the early 1680s onward, through which he executed a wide range of wall and ceiling paintings in Rome. Prior to this, Calandrucci had been a long-time collaborator in the workshop of Carlo Maratta, who is regarded as one of the most significant figures in the Roman art world of the 17th century. Many of the works attributed to Calandrucci in the collection of the Düsseldorf Art Academy are preparatory drawings that illustrate the breadth of his oeuvre: in addition to frescoes, he painted altarpieces, mythological scenes, devotional images for private use, and portraits.
