About the workCarlo Maratti became one of Italy’s most famous painters in the 17th century. He had studied under Andrea Sacchi, who ran a successful painting workshop in Rome. As a student, Maratti was allowed to create preliminary studies for his teacher’s paintings and to design individual figures on his own. On this sheet, he is working out the depiction of an arm belonging to a figure that appears in one of Sacchi’s later murals. After completing his training, Maratti himself received various commissions to paint churches, including commissions from three popes.
