Sheet dimensions40,4 × 28,8 cm
About the workAs chronicled in the Bible, John the Seer received a vision of God’s plan for the destruction and restoration of the world. The "Apocalyptic Woman" and a seven-headed dragon are shown on this sheet. The woman can be interpreted as the embodiment of Mary, but also as an image of the Christian church. The Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer created a sequence of images for a new edition of the text, known as the "Book of Revelation" or the "Apocalypse of John". They are distinguished by a fineness of line that was hitherto unprecedented in the medium of woodcut.
