About the workOutgrowing childhood? The gaze of the girl challenges viewers, who appears disproportionately large in contrast to the children’s furniture. Her stiff pose makes her body reminiscent of a doll. This commissioned work depicts the daughter of Almut Heise’s neighbour. The Hamburg-based artist usually uses her own photographs as the basis for her painted and drawn portraits. The figures she depicts often appear enigmatic and distant – an effect heightened by the uneven proportions.
