About the workThe Pierrot is a character that originated in sixteenth-century Italian theater. He is sympathetic – at times naïve – character who is unfortunate in love and who never finds happiness. This unfinished painting of a dead Pierrot was discovered in the Munich studio of the history painter Bruno Piglhein after his death. The perpetrator remains unseen and the details of the crime remain unclear. It is precisely this ambiguity that lends the work its particular tension. Significantly, the Pierrot can symbolically represent the close connection between comedy and tragedy in human life.
