not on displayThis lady's simple but elegant dress and lace bonnet indicate that she belonged to the wealthy bourgeoisie. Portraits for private use such as this one were an important source of income for painters in the 19th century. Carl Ferdinand Sohn was one of the most famous portrait painters in Düsseldorf. Numerous aspiring artists took private lessons from him, including Herminia Borchard, later Dassel. This portrait was painted shortly after she completed her studies. In 1849, she emigrated to the United States.
