About the workThe people sitting together here do not look at each other. Their eyes wander off into the distance. In the 1920s in Berlin, the bar at the Hotel Eden was a popular meeting place for artists and the wealthy bourgeoisie. But the hotel is also infamous because Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were brought here before they were murdered in 1919. Max Beckmann had this large-format woodcut realised by the famous Berlin printer Fritz Voigt, for whom he repeatedly expressed great appreciation. The artists of the Die Brücke group also made use of his expertise.
