not on displayThe video work by Düsseldorf artist Inken Boje questions the power and significance of hair. The act of cutting it – silently accompanied by the camera – takes centre stage. Hairstyles reflect notions of gender and body images of their time. In modern Western society, long hair is perceived as feminine and short hair as masculine. These attributions affect even the young. In particular, small children whose facial features do not give a clear indication of their gender are often judged by the length of their hair.
