About the work"She bubbled over with wit and spirit, her large eyes shone like suns." With these words, the painter Adeline Jaeger described her friend Amalie Bensinger. Both studied painting in Düsseldorf during the 1830s. This early self-portrait of Bensinger is the only known likeness of the artist to date. She depicted herself with a fashionable hairstyle of the period: a knot at the back of the head and side curls falling over the ears. The garment, just loosely rendered, is unusual and might be an underdress or a painter’s smock.
