About the workNo material seems as suitable for reproducing the underwater world as glass. Mauro Vianello grew up on the island of Murano near Venice and had access to both: the craft of glassmaking and the brightly coloured world of marine animals and plants. Vianello works with glass rods that he softens and melts together using a Bunsen burner. This flame-working technique enables him to depict the finest details in a seemingly infinite variety of colours. He gives the surface the lustre of water on skin or makes it appear matt.
