About the workAt the age of 15, Utagawa Yoshitsuya became a pupil of Kuniyoshi, one of the three pioneering artists of Japanese woodblock prints at the end of the Edo period. Yoshitsuya later achieved fame with his tattoo designs, advertising images, battle scenes and depictions of mythical animals such as the earth spider Tsuchigumo, which is being defeated here by intrepid warriors. The huge monster tries to intimidate opponents with its hairy tentacles and claws, eight eyes and voracious mouth. As soon as it is defeated, thousands of tiny spiders flee its body.
