Death of Pompey, 1962
Oil and graphite on canvas
(H x W)145 × 125 cm
About the workCy Twombly’s method of painting is very physical. He painted and wrote in a confident mix of carelessness and control. With their carnal, blood-red, pinkish, brownish and whitish tones, the colours resemble bodily fluids smeared on the surface of the work. Twombly’s style resembles a language in the process of its own creation, a whisper, murmur, stammer or moan. Next to his own signature, the location and the date are often names from antiquity. They evoke a past that stands in a contradictory relationship to the immediacy of his manner of painting.
