"My friends and I are constantly asking ourselves:

Am I where I want to be in life? What do I want from life? Where else do I want to go? Where am I coming up against limits and where am I coming across opportunities that I might not even make use of? To what extent am I standing in my own way?

This leads us and other young people to experience minor or even major existential life crises. We agonise over this, which is what Erwin Eisch’s glass object represents. But this object also reminds me that we should treat ourselves with more care and that we don’t always have to overthink everything."

About the workThe signature on this sculpture identifies Erwin Eisch as ist creator, but it is in fact a joint work by the artist and his wife, the wood sculptor and stained-glass artist Gretel Eisch. They met at the Munich Art Academy in the 1950s and collaborated closely from then on. For this portrait, Gretel Eisch produced the mould into which the glass was blown. The head belongs to a series of works in which Erwin Eisch explored how he was perceived by himself and others. He was an internationally respected role model for glass artists from 1962 onwards.
