About the workItaly has a long tradition as a holiday destination and as being an idealised country generally. Many classical and romantic artists travelled there and captured it in words and colours. Countless photographs were taken from the second half of the 19th century onwards. The often staged scenes of everyday life were a popular souvenir. The view of Naples depicted here is populated by shadowy figures. They indicate the long exposure time of the picture. Who or what was moving in the seconds of the shot appears ghostly on the photographic print.
