on display, room 026 About the workTowards the end of his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Arno Breker travelled to Paris for the first time. In this art metropolis he was fascinated by the works of contemporary French sculptors, including Aristide Maillol. Breker adopted the simple, smooth design of Maillol’s bodies for his “Kneeling Woman”. The naked female holds her arms protectively above her head, her gaze lowered. A similar understanding of the figure can be seen in Breker's "Aurora" on the roof of the Kunstpalast, which was created in 1926 on the occasion of the construction of the Ehrenhof complex. His art changed under National Socialism. With his monumentally exaggerated figures, he became one of the most successful sculptors of the Nazi reign of terror.
