About the workWhen Eduard Bendemann painted this portrait of his wife, she was 25 years old and had been married to him for eight years. They lived in Dresden, where he had been a professor since 1838 after establishing his career at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In both cities, Lida Bendemann ran a household that was frequented by important artists and musicians. The painter depicted himself in the wall motif on the right and his father-in-law, the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, on the left. This illustrates the extent to which Lida’s social status as a woman was determined by the men around her.
