About the workIrène Kanga, a member of the "Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise" (Art Circle of Congolese Plantation Workers), addresses sexual violence against women in this sculpture. At the same time, it refers to a historical event: in 1931, the rape of a woman from the Pende ethnic group committed by a Belgian official in Lusanga, Congo, led to an uprising against colonial rule. Made from materials such as palm oil and chocolate, the sculpture is a reminder of the exploitation by the plantation operators of today’s Unilever Group. CATPC uses the sale of the art to finance the reclamation of land for sustainable agriculture and reforestation.
