About the workDuring the First World War, Willy Jaeckel was deployed as a cartographer in Russia. Although he did not experience combat directly at the front, the war was still a harrowing experience for him. The printed portfolio “Memento 1914/15” depicts various war atrocities. This selection of ten lithographs was published as early as 1915 in an edition of 40 copies by Jaeckel’s courageous Berlin gallery owner I. B. Neumann. The artist’s frank approach to the subject was at odds with the prevailing and politically encouraged enthusiasm for war, which resulted in the portfolio being banned immediately.
