About the workFrancisco de Goya created “A Way of Flying” between 1815 and 1824 as one of a series of 22 prints. The common theme of many works in this series is the loss of solid ground. Here, four people are flying with the aid of bird-like apparatuses, with nothing but a dark emptiness below them. The scene was created at the dawn of aviation via hot-air balloons and flying machines. Goya’s portfolio was first published in 1864, decades after the Spanish artist’s death, under the title “Proverbios” (Proverbs).
