About the workWith wood, linen, glass and fruit, the artist reproduced very different surfaces in a realistic manner, thereby demonstrating her skills. Helen Searle had come to Düsseldorf from the United States in order to study art. Women did not have access to the academy at that time. Instead, Searle took private lessons from the successful still life painter Johann Wilhelm Preyer, whose delicate painting style was her inspiration. She painted this picture in Düsseldorf before returning home in 1872 and opening her own studio there.
