The Four Evangelists, ca. 1600
Alabaster
Height43 cm
Place of originambit of Cologne
About the workThe Evangelists are considered the authors of the four main books of the New Testament. They are portrayed here as scholars, accompanied by their identifying attributes, which can be traced back to early Christian symbols: Mark with the lion, John with the eagle, Luke with the ox at his feet, and Matthew with the angel. The origin of the sculptures is unclear; they were likely part of an altarpiece. The sculptor is probably Gerhard Scheben from Cologne, who created the tomb for Duke Wilhelm V in the Saint Lambertus Church in Düsseldorf around 1596.
