Untitled (Nude with Circle), ca. 1927–1929
Gelatin silver print
Image dimensions11,6 x 8 cm
About the workIn this nude by Czech photographer František Drtikol, a circular shape draws the eye to the accentuated dark pubic hair. Changing ideals of beauty and body images can be traced through art. A good 80 years after this photo, the intimate hairstyle emphasised by Drtikol would be difficult to find among the majority of women: the practice of freeing the entire body of hair witnessed a revival at the turn of the twenty-first century. As early as ancient Egypt, the hairless body was the ideal and pubic hair was also removed for aesthetic reasons.
