About the workIt is the gaze back at the camera that sets the young man in the lower centre of the image apart from the other workers. Amid the averted, focused faces, his fixation on the camera stands out and lends him individuality within an otherwise uniform crowd. At the same time, his gaze extends beyond the group towards the photographer, who is suddenly placed under observation himself. The young man’s expression leaves room for interpretation: does it convey approval, curiosity or a critical appraisal?
