About the workCaspar Scheuren’s commemorative print for the twenty-fifth anniversary of Pius IX’s papacy was created in 1871. Born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti in 1792, Pius IX died in Rome in 1878. At 31 years and 8 months, his pontificate is still the longest in history. He is shown in the centre giving a blessing and wearing a papal crown, with his coat of arms below and two figures with banners marking important events in his life. Pius IX proclaimed the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on 8 December 1854; the First Vatican Council, which he convened, opened in Rome on 8 December 1869.
