About the workA wild jumble of shapes and numbers spreads across the canvas. For this work, the French artist Arman used everyday items such as packing paper and a stamp. He began this series of stamp pictures in 1955, setting himself apart from classical painting with ready-made print patterns that were supposedly “unworthy of art”. Arman lived and worked in Nice as a member of the Nouveaux Réalistes (New Realists). This group of artists was united in their aim to integrate the everyday into art through the utilisation of ordinary objects.
