About the workIn 1924, George Grosz had to appear in court because of his watercolour-based prints of scenes from Berlin life – he was charged with an “attack on public morals”. Although the impressions of the bustling capital blur like the flat tint of watercolour on the paper, Grosz’s style still seems razor-sharp: after applying the fluid paint, he traced the outlines with a sharp pen. Nothing escapes the mocking gaze of the artist, who allows the bizarre figures of the demimonde to appear and disappear in a theatrical manner.
