The Mosses of Kaiserswerth, 1957
Oil on Canvas
(H x W)201 × 100 cm
About the workGerhard Hoehme’s works are characterised by his unique way of handling paint. Independent of the subject, the material plays a central role in the composition of the picture. Sometimes smeared on with a palette knife, at other times applied thickly with a brush, the paint leaves its support and penetrates into the space. Only the different shades of green and earthy red evoke a mossy landscape near the Düsseldorf district of Kaiserswerth, where Hoehme lived. The sprawling colour fields are united by a lively and organic quality that suggests unpredictable patterns of growth.
