About the workBetween 1912 and 1914, this picture – unusually large for Walter Ophey – was presented under the titles “Bacchanal”, “Autumn Rush” and “Autumn Fantasy” – the last one stuck. The image is a fantasy of colour and form that is only remotely reminiscent of a landscape. Opheys style is the main focus here; the colours and the paint play a leading role. He realised this work in autumn 1912 after being inspired by an exhibition of contemporary Italian art in Cologne: the paintings of the Futurists displayed there also featured pure colours and simplified forms.
