About the workOne of Wilhelm Morgner’s central themes was rural life: he was inspired by the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, whose free use of colour influenced him and drove him to develop his own artistic style. Here he juxtaposed contrasting fields of colour and ignored shadows and perspective, so that the impression of spatial depth emerges solely from the waves, lines and circular forms of the different fields. Morgner spent a large part of his life in Soest and realised an impressive number of works despite his premature death.
