About the workIn an exhibition review of 1902, this painting was described as having a "...mysterious semi-darkness, in which the matt glow of the mosaics, the lamps and lights shimmer out like coloured gemstones".The interior is part of the Capella Palatina of the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, Sicily. Built in the 12th century, it combines Norman, Arabic and Byzantine styles. The Düsseldorf landscape and architectural painter Heinrich Hermanns put a particular emphasis on capturing the atmosphere created primarily by the light entering the dome.
