About the workThe shape of this chest is reminiscent of the ancient sarcophagi in which high-ranking figures were buried. During the Renaissance, when artists and architects looked back to antiquity, new furniture was designed in this style. This elaborately carved piece is a so-called wedding chest. It was used to store the linen that a bride would bring with her when she got married. The bride’s coat of arms may have been mounted in the laurel wreath in the centre of the front panel.
