on display, room 027 About the workA colourful world in motion. Several eyes look out of the picture. Their bodies merge with their surroundings. What kind of creatures might they be? Ernst Wilhelm Nay’s works inspire us to fantasise. He created a system of abstracted forms that are only remotely reminiscent of the figurative. Nay’s works were ostracised by the National Socialists and exhibited at the "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) exhibition in 1937. After the end of the war and at the time this work was created, the first German museums began to purchase his paintings.
