About the workSelf-portraits run like a leitmotif through the oeuvre of Conrad Felixmüller, who had already begun studying at the Dresden Art Academy at the age of 15. The events of daily life – in 1917 these were the burdens of hardship and war – offered him just as much stimulation as questions of artistic creation. The state of despondency is underlined here by the view of a dreary back yard without living nature and by the falling darkness.
