on display, room 005.1 About the workAnna Maria Luisa de’ Medici was the daughter of Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 1691 she married Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz. As a patron of the arts, she supported her husband in the construction of the Düsseldorf Gemäldegalerie, which forms the basis of the Kunstpalast’s collection. In 1694 she personally funded the construction of an opera house in Düsseldorf, but it was destroyed in 1758 during the Seven Years’ War. A skilful diplomat, she succeeded in preventing the bombardment and conquest of Düsseldorf by French troops in 1702 after the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession.
