About the workInstead of the magnificent buildings of Rome, the Venetian artist Bernardo Bellotto chose a street on the banks of the Tiber with a freight port for this image. He focused on the everyday activities of workers and townsfolk. The viewer’s gaze follows the lines of the street and river towards the vast blue morning sky. The light plays on the detailed walls of the buildings. With strong contrasts, sharp diagonals and a deep horizon, Bellotto found his own style during this period. He was one of the most prominent cityscape painters of the eighteenth century.
