on display, room 011 About the workDüsseldorf artist Andreas Achenbach painted many views of the Belgian and Dutch coasts. He was known for the dramatic use of light in his works. In an art journal of the time, this depiction of the fish market in Ostend was described as having "a fervour of colour and luminosity that far surpasses the achievements of his contemporaries". The effect of this painting is also due to the large picture plane and the contrast between the sizeable sails and small details. Such formats were explicitly created to be impressive exhibition pieces.
