About the work“In God’s creation there is no genre or category,” wrote the painter Joseph Anton Koch. By this he meant the strict separation of landscape painting from history painting, for example. He overcame this boundary in his works: this is an atmospheric depiction of Serpentara in Italy, a mountain landscape not far from Rome, but it is also a biblical scene at the same time. Koch spent most of his life in Italy and is credited with discovering Serpentara as a motif. The diverse vegetation of the oak grove attracted many artists, and Koch himself devoted numerous studies and paintings to it.
