About the workHelene Troost is elegantly portrayed by Düsseldorf academy professor Heinrich Kolbe. The wife of an Elberfeld entrepreneur clearly shows that she belongs to the upper middle classes, that she was able to afford the successful portraitist. Her high-necked dress in black silk taffeta is of high quality and conveys a sense of traditional restraint and order. This is in contrast to her accessories: the elaborate curls, white lace and bows, together with the fresh citrus blossoms, are part of to the lighter and brighter Biedermeier fashion of the time.
