About the work“The most difficult thing in what I do is probably always modesty,” wrote Wilhelm Wagenfeld to a friend in 1965. With his restraint, he aimed for the simple mass product that was “not modern, not unfashionable, not original, not unoriginal, but simply there”. Wagenfeld trained as a draughtsman, chaser and silversmith in Bremen, Hanau and at the Bauhaus in Weimar. He remained in Weimar and in 1928 took over the management of the metal workshop at the State Bauhaus School. From 1930 until around 1936, he supplied designs for the Schott glassworks in Jena.
